SPACE TIME MATTER

(Outside back cover)

This book gathers the texts from two seminars on space and time given by XAVIER ZUBIRI (1898-1983) towards the beginning of the 1970’s, and also a lengthy manuscript on matter from the same period. The first seminar, El espacio (Space), is from 1973 and consists of four lectures. The second seminar, Sobre el tiempo (On Time), consists of two lectures given in 1970. The first of these two was published in 1976, and for the second he left an extended handwritten text. Immediately after giving the seminar on space, Zubiri began to work on a full text on materia (matter), which now makes its appearance exactly as he left it. The close proximity of composition provides these texts with a profound homogeneity and allows the formation of an organic set on the three fundamental problems of the so-called Philosophy of Nature, one of the most important portions of Metaphysics. With this, the reader has access to the systematic development of a new space in the philosophy of Zubiri. If the volumes already published in this series allow us to know his opinions on the Theory of knowledge, Inteligencia y realidad (Intelligence and Reality), Inteligencia y logos (Intelligence and Logos), Inteligencia y razón (Intelligence and Reason), general Metaphysics, Sobre la esencia (On Essence), Estructura dinámica de la realidad (Dynamic Structure of Reality), Anthropology, Sobre el hombre (On Man), Ethics and Esthetics, Sobre el sentimiento y la volición (On Sentiment and Volition), and Philosophy of religion, El hombre y Dios (Man and God), El problema filosófico de la historia de las religiones (The Philosophical Problem of the History of Religions), the volume we now publish gathers the mature thought of Zubiri concerning the great problems of the Philosophy of nature.

As in previous occasions, the treatment Zubiri gives to these questions is profoundly original and establishes a milestone in the philosophical literature of the present century.
